Google has begun rolling out Gemini’s Temporary Chat feature widely across mobile and web clients. However, the new button may not yet appear in every web instance.
Temporary chat availability
On mobile, the temporary chat option now sits in the side panel beside the new chat button. Also, the “Ask in a temporary chat” prompt appears in the prompt bar and above the model selector when a thread is active. Once users close a temporary conversation, the chat becomes permanently inaccessible.
How temporary chats work
Temporary chats do not appear in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity, and Google does not use them to train models or personalize accounts. Moreover, Google stores temporary chat data for 72 hours to help respond to requests and to keep Gemini secure. As a result, users will receive generic responses in temporary mode rather than replies tailored to their history. In addition, temporary chats do not support saving information for future personalization or submitting feedback on replies.
Personal context and image updates
By contrast, Personal Context mode is enabled by default and lets Gemini draw on past conversations to tailor suggestions. Users retain control and can switch off Personal Context or erase past chats through settings. The rollout began with Gemini 2.5 Pro, with broader availability planned for other tiers. Additionally, Google introduced the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model for image generation and editing, supporting consistent edits, photo blending, multi-step modifications, and style transfers. Finally, generated or edited visuals will include visible and invisible SynthID watermarks to indicate AI origin.
