Google announced that Gemini will roll out in early access on smart speakers and displays this October. The new AI will replace Google Assistant on these devices and will come in both free and paid versions. That decision highlights Google’s push to expand subscriptions, a strategy similar to Amazon’s Alexa+.
Gemini was first demoed at CES 2025, where the company showcased its ability to make conversations with devices more natural. Instead of rigid voice commands, users can talk to Gemini as though speaking to another person. The assistant can answer trivia questions or adjust a thermostat with equal ease. Furthermore, its multimodal abilities mean it can combine data from other Nest devices, such as a security camera feed, to provide detailed and context-aware answers.
Subscription Questions Remain
Although the October release promises improved interactions and access to Gemini Live for personalized conversations, pricing details remain unclear. Google has yet to explain which features will be free and which will require payment. Earlier this year, the company said Nest Aware subscribers who currently pay $10 per month would gain early access to Gemini in Google Home. The premium version may be bundled into that subscription or offered separately as an add-on.
Looking Ahead
Google says it will “share more details soon” about the rollout. The timing could align with refreshed Nest devices, as the current Nest Hub dates back to 2021. With new hardware potentially on the horizon, the Gemini launch may be paired with a much-needed update to the lineup.
