Google Adds AI Mode to Search for Personalized Results

Google Search with new AI Mode feature for personalized results.

Google has rolled out a major update to its Search feature by introducing AI Mode, combining the power of AI with real-time information access. This new feature allows users to ask complex questions and receive more detailed, personalized answers directly within the Search interface. It is especially useful for tasks like trip planning, where a single search can pull together relevant details such as flight schedules, weather updates, and things to do in a specific location. However, AI Mode is currently available only to Labs users in the U.S., though the company is experimenting with expanding access.

How AI Mode Enhances Google Search

AI Mode extends the current AI Overviews seen at the top of Google search results. Previously, when users performed a search, an AI-generated summary would appear above the list of links, offering a quick overview based on available information. With AI Mode, this summary becomes more detailed and personalized, providing richer insights. As Google refines the feature, it will eventually allow users to ask follow-up questions and receive tailored responses as their queries evolve.

Currently, AI Mode is available through the Google Labs feature, but the company has removed the waitlist for U.S. users, allowing broader access. In the future, a small percentage of U.S. users will see an AI Mode tab directly in the main Search interface. The feature is optimized for mobile, especially for multimodal queries that include both text and images.

New Visual Elements and Future Developments

As part of the update, Google has added new visual elements to AI Mode. For instance, users will soon see rich visual cards for local businesses and products. These cards will provide key details, including ratings, opening hours, and promotions, while offering real-time availability from nearby stores. Powered by Google’s Shopping Graph, these cards will pull from over 45 billion product listings, ensuring up-to-date and reliable information.

Additionally, AI Mode introduces a new feature that allows users to revisit past searches. On desktop, a left-side panel will soon display previously accessed topics, helping users continue long-term tasks, like planning a trip or making a purchase. This new functionality aims to enhance productivity by providing easy access to earlier information and supporting follow-up questions. Google has emphasized that AI Mode is still evolving, and the company encourages users to provide feedback to improve the feature.

As Google moves forward with AI Mode, it is also facing legal challenges in the U.S., including a lawsuit regarding its monopoly status in the search market. Despite these challenges, the company remains focused on enhancing user experience with AI-driven features.
