Fujifilm has introduced the X-E5, a compact mirrorless camera priced at $1,699.95 and set to launch in August 2025. While it continues the brand’s retro-inspired trend, the X-E5 features a sharper and cleaner design with a single-piece machined top plate. This gives it a bold appearance, especially compared to the high-demand X100VI. Although the new model is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, the X-E4, it remains portable especially when paired with the right lens.
Both the X-E5 and X100VI share the same 40-megapixel sensor, tilting rear display, and in-body image stabilization. Notably, Fujifilm has introduced a new 23mm f/2.8 lens with the camera. Together, they replicate the X100’s focal length but offer more flexibility, thanks to the X-E5’s interchangeable lens system. Initially, the lens will be available only as part of a bundle priced at $1,899.95. However, it will be sold separately for $499.95 by the end of 2025.
Function Meets Vintage Style
One of the major changes in the X-E5 is its flippy front control lever. Designed to enhance usability, the lever includes five programmable functions. Among them is “Surround View,” which allows users to preview beyond the crop when shooting in certain aspect ratios. Consequently, this makes framing more intuitive and creative.
Another standout addition is the dedicated film simulation dial. Featuring a viewing window on the top plate, it mimics classic frame counters. Users can access six popular presets as well as three customizable slots from a total of 20 built-in film simulations. While this dial isn’t entirely new to Fujifilm, its layout and presentation here feel especially refined.
Moreover, the X-E5 incorporates a Classic Display Mode for its electronic viewfinder. This 2.36-million dot EVF shows simplified red numerals, rangefinder-style frame lines, and a side-positioned needle light meter. As a result, the viewfinder echoes both Leica M3 and Pentax K1000 aesthetics, creating a nostalgic yet functional shooting experience.
Modern Tech with a Timeless Feel
Fujifilm continues to integrate its latest imaging technologies into the X-series. The X-E5 gets the brand’s latest sensor, updated stabilization system, and improved autofocus. While it doesn’t stray far from Fujifilm’s established formula, the X-E5 appears to strike a balance between innovation and familiarity. Unlike the more experimental X Half camera, this model caters directly to long-time enthusiasts of the X-series.
With the X-E5, Fujifilm reinforces its commitment to blending vintage appeal with modern performance. By keeping user experience central and including thoughtful design tweaks, the company ensures this new model will resonate with photographers seeking both style and substance.
