Meta has begun testing a redesigned Facebook experience that opens directly into a full-screen video feed, marking its most significant shift toward a video-first platform. The new interface mirrors TikTok’s immersive format by displaying vertically scrolling videos immediately after users launch the app. Consequently, Meta aims to increase engagement and encourage users to spend more time watching video content on Facebook.
The company will initially roll out the test in selected countries where video consumption is already high. Moreover, Meta plans to evaluate user feedback before expanding the experience to additional markets, including the United States. Users participating in the test can switch back to Facebook’s traditional feed if they prefer the classic interface.
Video-First Experience Takes Center Stage
The redesigned app places short-form videos at the heart of Facebook’s home experience instead of the traditional News Feed. Therefore, users will discover recommended content through an algorithm-driven stream similar to TikTok’s “For You” page. Meta believes the approach can improve content discovery while helping creators reach broader audiences.
Tom Alison, head of the Facebook app, confirmed the company is testing a “reimagined experience” that opens directly into full-screen video. The update reflects Meta’s continued investment in video content across its family of apps. In addition, Facebook will continue supporting users who prefer the conventional feed during the testing phase.
Meta Expands Its Competitive Strategy
The latest test forms part of Meta’s broader effort to compete more directly with TikTok, which continues to dominate short-form video engagement worldwide. Previously, Meta introduced Instagram Reels to address changing user preferences. Now, Facebook is following a similar path by making video the primary entry point into the app.
Meta has also introduced additional products, including a standalone Marketplace app called Seller and a community-focused Forum app, while expanding profile verification options. As a result, the company is diversifying Facebook beyond social networking into commerce, creator tools, and community engagement.
Adapting to Changing User Behavior
Short-form video has become the fastest-growing content format across social media platforms. Therefore, Meta continues to reshape Facebook around personalized recommendations rather than posts from friends and family alone. The company expects the redesigned experience to improve user retention and strengthen its position against competitors in the rapidly evolving social media landscape.
