Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) is on the brink of transforming its water distribution management through the adoption of groundbreaking technology aimed at drastically reducing leaks across its extensive network. This pivotal initiative is a significant component of EtihadWE’s comprehensive Transformation Roadmap, which coincides with the World Water Week held from August 25 to 30, 2024.
Innovative Leak Detection Solutions
In its bid to combat water wastage, EtihadWE will roll out several advanced technologies, including SmartBall and state-of-the-art data loggers. The SmartBall, equipped with high-precision sensors, will navigate through pipelines, delivering real-time alerts on potential leaks and providing crucial data on the condition of the network. Concurrently, data loggers will offer continuous monitoring of water flow, identifying anomalies that could signal leaks. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive strategy to tackle leaks efficiently.
Additionally, EtihadWE plans to bolster its leak detection efforts by installing a greater number of meters and employing district metering, a method that segments the network into smaller, more manageable zones. This approach enhances the accuracy of leak detection, enabling quicker identification and resolution of issues, even those located underground.
Addressing Non-Revenue Water (NRW)
Given the UAE’s limited freshwater resources, effective water management is vital. A primary focus of this initiative is to address non-revenue water (NRW), which refers to water that is lost before it reaches consumers due to factors such as equipment failures or inaccurate meter readings. NRW represents a significant challenge as it involves water that has already been desalinated and is in transit but not accounted for in terms of both quantity and revenue.
Support for National Water Security Goals
This strategic initiative aligns with the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, both of which emphasize sustainable water management practices. By targeting NRW reduction, EtihadWE directly supports these national strategies, aiming to enhance the sustainability and security of the UAE’s water resources.
The company is also nearing the completion of a large-scale smart meter rollout, which will further advance its objectives of efficient water management and improved customer service.
