e& UAE has successfully tested the 6 GHz and 600 MHz spectrum bands, recently allocated for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). With the use of commercial-grade Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), the trial achieved ultra-fast speeds of up to 10 Gbps on the 6 GHz band. In contrast, the 600 MHz band demonstrated its capacity to deliver 5G coverage stretching more than 6 kilometres.
This marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of wireless technology in the UAE. Not only does it showcase enhanced speed and reach, but it also paves the way for the transition to 5G-Advanced and eventually, 6G. Marwan Bin Shakar, Acting Chief Technology Officer at e& UAE, emphasized that these results were achieved using standard commercial hardware, underlining their real-world viability.
Spectrum Integration for Performance and Reach
Integrating the new spectrum bands into its existing 5G infrastructure, e& UAE is improving both network speed and coverage. The 6 GHz band, offering 350 MHz of bandwidth, is ideal for high-demand applications such as 8K video streaming, rapid file downloads, and immersive virtual reality. On the other hand, the 600 MHz band ensures widespread coverage, performing well in both densely populated cities and remote rural regions.
The test’s implications are broad. Consumers can expect significantly faster and more reliable internet access. Meanwhile, enterprises will benefit from enhanced cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, and more effective support for smart city solutions. This approach helps bridge the digital divide and meet the growing demands of a hyper-connected society.
Boosting UAE’s Global 5G Leadership
The TDRA’s decision in 2024 to allocate these spectrum bands reinforces the UAE’s strategic position in global telecom innovation. According to GSMA Intelligence, 5G will contribute over US$610 billion to global GDP by 2030. Notably, mid-band frequencies like 6 GHz are projected to account for nearly 65% of that economic value, emphasizing the importance of deploying them effectively.
By combining the strengths of the C-band, 6 GHz, and 600 MHz, e& UAE is developing a powerful, future-ready 5G ecosystem. This integrated strategy not only enhances current digital services but also builds a strong foundation for the technologies of tomorrow. Ultimately, it supports the country’s digital ambitions and strengthens its presence on the global technology stage.
