China has launched the world’s first dedicated vocational school for robots in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. The facility has welcomed its first batch of 30 humanoid robots, which are being trained for practical roles across multiple industries.
The school started operations this week and follows a vocational training model similar to human institutions. Moreover, it combines physical evaluations, specialized lessons, hands-on practice, and final skill assessments before robots receive workplace certifications.
Training Robots for Different Industries
The Hangzhou Robot School includes robotic students from manufacturing, service, security, and entertainment sectors. Additionally, the training program focuses on matching lessons with each robot’s physical abilities and hardware design.
The curriculum covers four main areas: technical skills, nursing, arts, and sports. Furthermore, lessons are customized based on what each robot can physically perform. This structured approach aims to connect robotics research with practical workforce applications.
Moving Beyond Research Labs
The school operates as part of a broader national pilot program focused on embodied AI applications. Furthermore, it was developed through collaboration with research institutions and industry partners.
Robots at the facility use advanced AI systems that combine vision-language-action models with logical reasoning. Therefore, they can analyze unfamiliar situations, overcome obstacles, and plan new actions instead of only following pre-programmed instructions.
Additionally, footage from the facility shows humanoid robots participating in sports drills and musical exercises. These activities demonstrate their movement control, coordination, and ability to perform tasks in more realistic environments.
China’s Growing Robot Workforce Strategy
The initiative reflects China’s wider effort to accelerate the use of humanoid and autonomous robots in factories, public spaces, and service industries.
