AWS and Azure Expand Multicloud Networking

AWS Azure multicloud networking

Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure are expanding their multicloud collaboration with private, high-speed connectivity between the two platforms.

AWS-Azure Connectivity Enters Preview

The new offering combines AWS Interconnect (multicloud) with Azure Multicloud Interconnect. As a result, customers can establish dedicated private connections between AWS and Azure without building the underlying network themselves.

Previously, companies often had to coordinate physical connectivity, routing, provisioning and third-party network services. That process could take weeks or months. Now, customers can provision connectivity through the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI or Azure portal.

Moreover, the service uses an open API specification for network interoperability. AWS introduced that specification as part of its multicloud networking initiative at re:Invent 2025. Microsoft has now adopted the same framework for Azure connectivity.

Designed for Enterprise and AI Workloads

The companies are targeting organizations that operate applications and data across multiple clouds. In particular, AI workloads increasingly span cloud environments because companies need access to distributed data and different computing resources.

Furthermore, the connection provides dedicated private bandwidth between AWS and Azure. The architecture uses four independent logical paths across physically diverse facilities and routers to support high availability. AWS also says MACsec encryption protects traffic between the cloud providers’ edge routers.

“Customers told us they wanted a better way to connect workloads spanning AWS and Azure, and the old ways of doing it were clunky. With AWS Interconnect-multicloud and Azure Multicloud Interconnect, we’re proving what’s possible when both sides commit to a high bar: MACsec security out of the box, four-nines availability, and scalability at the click of a button.”

Availability and Broader Multicloud Strategy

Initially, the AWS Interconnect – multicloud preview with Azure is available in four AWS regions. These include US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. California), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and Europe (Frankfurt).

Meanwhile, AWS already offers multicloud connectivity with Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Therefore, Azure becomes the latest major cloud provider to adopt the interoperability specification behind AWS Interconnect – multicloud.

The companies also plan to expand regional availability and bandwidth options. Consequently, the collaboration could make multicloud architectures easier to operate as enterprises increase cloud adoption and AI deployments.
