Apple is reportedly planning significant upgrades for the next iPad Pro. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming model may include a second portrait sensor alongside the current landscape selfie camera. This change aims to address user concerns after Apple moved the selfie camera from the top to the side last year.
Some users found the new side placement awkward for video calls and FaceTime in portrait mode. However, Apple likely won’t reverse the switch so soon. Instead, adding a portrait lens could satisfy both sides of the selfie camera debate. This dual-camera setup could improve video call experiences in both landscape and portrait orientations.
The M5 Chip and Launch Timeline
Apart from camera upgrades, the new iPad Pro is expected to be powered by Apple’s latest M5 chip. In fact, the iPad Pro could be the first device to feature the M5 processor, with M5-powered MacBooks following in early 2026.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the M5 iPad Pro could enter mass production during the first half of 2025. Since the M4 iPad Pro launched in May 2024, Apple’s usual update cycle of about 18 months points to a release around September or October 2025. This timeline fits Apple’s pattern of launching new iPad Pro models in the fall.
Upcoming Apple Events and Other Launches
Before the new iPad Pro arrives, Apple will hold its annual iPhone launch event in September. This event is expected to introduce the iPhone 17 series, including four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Given Apple’s typical product schedule, the iPad Pro update will likely follow soon after the iPhone announcements. As a result, Apple fans can expect a busy second half of 2025 filled with new hardware releases.
