Elon Musk makes a New threat to Apple against GPT Integration

Apple may be banned if ChatGPT Integrated

Apple is expanding into AI and announced a partnership with OpenAI on Monday. Elon Musk warned he will ban Apple devices at his companies if the iPhone maker integrates OpenAI’s AI software at the operating system level, calling it a security breach.

His remarks followed Apple’s announcement of the partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Apple announced at their annual developer’s conference that they will integrate ChatGPT with Siri and make it available for free in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk said on X, the social media platform he owns. Visitors will check their Apple devices at the door, where the staff will store them in a Faraday cage.

Apple also announced the launch of its generative AI, known as Apple Intelligence. They will soon introduce it across its ecosystem. The company stressed that it will keep user data safe and that it has built its AI “with privacy from the ground up.” Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said, “All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence. It’s personal intelligence and it’s the next big step for Apple.”

However, Musk questioned Apple’s capability to ensure that OpenAI would protect users’ privacy. “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river,” he wrote on X. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015. But, had a falling out with the start-up and sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in February. He alleged it abandoned its initial non-profit mission and called the company “a lie.” OpenAI, backed by Microsoft with about a $13 billion investment, said that Musk was just regretful he wasn’t part of the company’s success.

Musk launched his own AI start-up, xAI, in July last year. It released its Grok-1 generative AI platform in November, followed by Grok-1.5 in March. Grok aims to be a “conversational AI for understanding the universe,” aligning with Musk’s agenda to understand “the true nature of the universe.”

At Grok-1’s launch, Musk said xAI would make Grok open source, doubling down on his offensive against OpenAI.
