Apple is reportedly exploring future mixed-reality devices, including a lighter and more affordable successor to its Vision Pro headset. Meanwhile, the company is also working on display-less smart glasses as it evaluates the direction of its AR and VR lineup.
Whenever Apple introduces a new product, enthusiasts often speculate about future versions. Similarly, the Vision Pro has sparked discussions about how the headset category could evolve in the coming years.
According to a recent report by Mark Gurman, the current Vision Pro model is considered a step toward future technology. Additionally, standalone AR glasses remain a possibility, although development is still in an early phase and focuses mainly on underlying technology.
Lighter Headset Designs And Smart Glasses Research
Furthermore, Gurman reported that Apple engineers are exploring a redesigned headset under the codename N224. The team is reportedly studying different concepts, including approaches that place components similarly to newer products from competitors.
The report also suggests that Apple understands the need for a lighter and more affordable device. However, Gurman noted that there are slim chances of this product launching soon because Apple is considering a different direction for its mixed-reality strategy.
Moreover, the potential device is not expected before late 2028 or 2029 if it reaches the market. In the meantime, Apple is focusing heavily on display-less smart glasses, as senior Vision Pro engineers reportedly want to keep the category active.
Additionally, a future headset could feature a more powerful chip. The technology may come from Mac-based processors or newer iPhone chip designs, offering improved performance for upcoming mixed-reality experiences.
Leadership Changes And Employee Break Tradition
Meanwhile, Apple’s new CEO John Ternus is reportedly continuing a tradition associated with the company’s previous leadership. Employees may receive time off during Thanksgiving week, according to a memo shared by Mark Gurman.
The memo reportedly states that employees would have Monday through Wednesday off before Thanksgiving. Furthermore, workers in retail, AppleCare, and international teams would receive three additional days off at another time.
The message also recognized the effort behind the “Surprise and Shine” event. Therefore, the company highlighted the importance of giving employees time to rest after completing major projects.
As Apple continues developing future devices, the mixed-reality market remains focused on lighter designs, improved hardware, and more natural user experiences. The race for next-generation AR technology continues, because apparently even glasses now need a long-term strategy meeting before they can exist.
