Al-Mansour and General Motors to manufacture electric cars in Egypt

Al-Mansour Automotive Company and America’s General Motors have signed an agreement to study the practicalities of joint manufacturing electric cars in Egypt and to ask for support from the Egyptian government once the plan is complete.

The two companies will specify production requirements, volumes, and incentives that may be required of the government, with the hopes of mass-producing electric cars that will be sold in Egypt and exported throughout Africa.

State-owned El Nasr Automotive previously had a plan to manufacture electric cars with China’s Dongfeng Motor, but it was recently suspended due to a breakdown in negotiations over the cost of imported components. El Nasr Automotive is currently searching for other partners while the Egyptian government goes through with its plan to strengthen the national infrastructure for electric vehicles, such as by constructing 3,000 charging stations across Cairo and Alexandria.

Since 1975, Al-Mansour Automotive has partnered with General Motors as their dealer in Egypt and has manufactured General Motors vehicles through their joint company, General Motors Egypt, since 1983.
