Hotels in Abu Dhabi are preparing to introduce facial recognition systems for both guests and staff. This advanced technology aims to enhance operational efficiency and improve security across the hospitality sector. Initially, the system will roll out in five-star hotels located in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra region. Later, four-star hotels will adopt it, followed by gradual implementation in all other hotel categories.
This initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), in partnership with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). The agreement between these agencies marks the emirate’s first government-led project in the hotel sector using facial recognition technology. According to officials, the move reinforces Abu Dhabi’s global reputation as the world’s safest city, a title it has held for nine consecutive years in the Numbeo Safety Index.
Boosting Efficiency and Guest Safety
The face recognition system works by capturing and analyzing biometric data during guest check-in. This data is then securely encrypted and pulled from ICP records, ensuring privacy while streamlining hotel operations. It is transmitted to a centralized database overseen by DCT Abu Dhabi. The technology aims to significantly reduce check-in times and make the verification process faster and more seamless.
Importantly, the collected data will be used exclusively for guest safety and to improve hotel service quality. Authorities emphasize that the system adheres strictly to legal and ethical standards, ensuring transparency and data protection throughout the process.
Seamless Rollout and National Alignment
DCT Abu Dhabi has ensured a smooth launch by working closely with selected hotels. As part of the pilot phase, hotels receive detailed system briefings, technical guidance, and comprehensive training for their staff. By collaborating with national authorities and private hotel partners, the department aims to create a secure, digitally connected hospitality experience.
In doing so, the emirate continues to align with broader national goals of digital transformation and public safety. As more hotels come on board, this initiative could set a new benchmark for smart tourism in the UAE.
