Batelco and Ericsson Advance Bahrain’s 5G Network

Batelco Ericsson Bahrain 5G Partnership Signing

Batelco by Beyon and Ericsson have expanded their strategic partnership to strengthen Bahrain’s mobile network infrastructure. The agreement will improve 5G coverage, increase network capacity and introduce artificial intelligence (AI)-powered network capabilities.

Announced on November 1, 2026, on the sidelines of Gateway Gulf 2026, the collaboration combines Ericsson’s Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions with cloud-native core network technologies. Together, the companies aim to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity for consumers and businesses across Bahrain.

The announcement took place in the presence of His Excellency Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Beyon Group. The partnership also supports Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s broader digital infrastructure development.

AI-Powered Technology to Improve Network Performance

A key component of the agreement involves testing Ericsson’s AI-native Scheduler for Link Adaptation. This technology uses artificial intelligence to adjust data transmission rates as radio conditions change.

As network conditions change, the system can optimise how efficiently mobile devices receive data. As a result, it aims to improve download performance, data throughput, and overall network efficiency.

The company will also introduce advanced Massive MIMO radio systems across Batelco’s network. These systems use multiple antennas to improve network capacity and mobile data performance.

The technology can also improve energy efficiency while reducing equipment footprint. This will help Batelco accommodate increasing mobile data demand and deliver more consistent connectivity.

Batelco Modernises Core Network Infrastructure

Alongside its radio network expansion, Batelco will modernise its core infrastructure using Ericsson’s cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core solution.

The upgrade includes improvements to the packet core and Unified Data Management systems. These components help manage network traffic, subscriber information and mobile connectivity services.

Furthermore, Batelco will transition its cloud infrastructure from Network Functions Virtualisation Infrastructure (NFVi) to Ericsson Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution.

This transition will provide a more flexible foundation for future network services. It will also help the operator manage growing data requirements and improve service reliability.

Meanwhile, the companies will strengthen 5G Standalone readiness and explore additional 5G Advanced capabilities. These developments will prepare Batelco’s infrastructure for future connectivity requirements, including the eventual introduction of 6G technology in Bahrain.

Partnership Supports Bahrain’s Digital Infrastructure Goals

Batelco CEO Maitham Abdulla said the expanded collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to improving connectivity across Bahrain. He highlighted network coverage, capacity, and advanced technologies as priorities to deliver better digital experiences.

Similarly, Petra Schirren, President of Ericsson Gulf Region, said the partnership combines advanced radio solutions, AI-enabled capabilities and cloud-native technologies to improve network performance.

The collaboration also aligns with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, which prioritises digital transformation and the development of advanced infrastructure.

Through this agreement, Batelco aims to strengthen its position in Bahrain’s telecommunications market. Moreover, AI-powered network management and cloud-native technologies will support more efficient operations and future service development.

As mobile data consumption continues to rise, the partnership gives Batelco a foundation to expand its 5G capabilities and prepare for the next generation of telecommunications services.
