BMW iX3 Brings 805km Range and Rapid Charging to Premium SUVs

BMW iX3 premium electric SUV

The new BMW iX3 combines a claimed range of up to 805km with rapid charging and a technology-rich cabin. Moreover, it introduces the German carmaker’s Neue Klasse electric architecture, marking a substantial step forward from its predecessor.

As competition intensifies in the UAE’s premium EV market, the iX3 makes a strong case through comfort, performance and everyday practicality. However, some compromises around wheel size, ride quality and brake feel deserve consideration.

Sixth-generation eDrive technology supports charging speeds of up to 400kW, strengthening the SUV’s appeal for longer journeys. Meanwhile, four high-performance ‘superbrain’ computers manage key vehicle functions alongside the ‘Heart of Joy’ drivetrain and driving dynamics controls.

In addition, enhanced automated driving features and a new digital ecosystem aim to make driving more intuitive. The model also promises a lifecycle carbon footprint more than 30% lower than its predecessor’s.

Distinctive styling and a practical cabin

The iX3 makes a strong first impression with distinctive proportions, striking LED signatures and a sculpted rear. Furthermore, its cleaner surfaces give the familiar SUV shape a contemporary character.

It measures 4,782mm long, 1,895mm wide and 1,635mm tall. Despite its fresh appearance, it retains the upright stance and proportions associated with the brand’s Sports Activity Vehicles.

Optional 22-inch alloy wheels add considerable visual impact. However, buyers should consider their potential effect on efficiency and comfort.

Larger tyres generally increase energy consumption, which can reduce driving range. Consequently, drivers seeking maximum distance between charges may prefer the standard wheel options.

Inside, Panoramic iDrive dominates a layered dashboard with crisp displays and synthetic leather upholstery. Meanwhile, knitted dashboard accents introduce texture and warmth, helping the cabin feel more welcoming.

The front seats offer generous adjustment and supportive cushioning for longer journeys. Additionally, the massage function brings welcome comfort during traffic delays, school collections or charging stops.

Wide-opening doors and a comfortable ride height make entry straightforward. Up front, occupants get a 12-volt socket, two USB-C ports and a ventilated wireless charging pad.

However, a second wireless pad for the front passenger would improve convenience. The existing connections should nevertheless meet most everyday charging needs.

Rear passengers benefit from a flat floor and generous legroom. Furthermore, the cabin offers enough width for three children across the second row.

The rear seats feel firm but supportive, while the centre armrest adds comfort on longer trips. Overall, the interior combines an appealing digital environment with useful family space.

Intuitive technology and strong performance

Panoramic iDrive brings four display and control elements together within a single interface. Although the screens initially look overwhelming, the system becomes intuitive with use.

Menus follow a logical structure, and drivers can customise the interface extensively. In addition, wireless Apple CarPlay connects smoothly, while Android Auto comes as standard.

Operating System X supports personal settings through BMW ID profiles, app connectivity and over-the-air updates. Meanwhile, the Intelligent Personal Assistant adds voice options, proactive suggestions and customisable routines.

Looking ahead, planned large language model integration could enable more natural voice conversations. For now, the existing system provides plenty of scope to tailor the digital experience.

On the road, the iX3 50 delivers immediate power and torque, making overtaking and climbing steep inclines feel easy. In Efficient mode, acceleration remains smooth and measured.

By contrast, Sport mode sharpens responses and gives the SUV a greater sense of urgency. The suspension also balances urban comfort with controlled cornering.

However, uneven highways can unsettle the ride, particularly with the optional 22-inch wheels. That behaviour makes wheel choice an important consideration for buyers who prioritise comfort.

The steering initially feels lighter than some drivers might expect. Nevertheless, it becomes more natural with familiarity, while handling stays composed despite the vehicle’s substantial weight.

Braking performance provides sufficient stopping power in everyday driving. However, the pedal can feel slightly soft under harder braking, reducing the otherwise reassuring sense of control.

Verdict

The BMW iX3 50 xDrive brings together strong performance, impressive claimed range and a spacious, practical cabin. Moreover, its rapid charging capability and extensive digital features strengthen its appeal as a premium family EV.

The larger wheels introduce a compromise in ride comfort, and the brake pedal could feel firmer. Nevertheless, the overall package offers a convincing blend of refinement, usability and responsive performance.

Ultimately, the iX3 provides a compelling preview of the brand’s next generation of electric vehicles. Its combination of long-distance potential and everyday comfort makes it a strong contender in the premium electric SUV market.
