OpenAI is testing a new visual advertising format in ChatGPT. The ads will appear alongside user-generated images, adding a new commercial layer to the image-creation experience.
The company announced the format on October 5, saying testing will begin later this month in the United States. Initially, the test will involve a limited group of advertisers.
Importantly, OpenAI says the ads will remain separate from generated images. They will also carry clear advertising labels. Furthermore, the company says ads will not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
The move expands OpenAI’s advertising strategy beyond the existing ad formats. It also comes as ChatGPT reaches about 1.2 billion users each week, according to OpenAI.
Visual Ads Enter Image Generation
The new format is designed specifically for visual discovery. For example, advertisements can show product inspiration, product usage or experiences connected with a service. Consequently, brands can present products through imagery while users explore ideas in ChatGPT.
However, the generated image itself will remain separate from the sponsored material. OpenAI says this separation will help distinguish user-requested content from advertising.
The initial rollout will focus on image generation. Meanwhile, OpenAI has not announced a wider international launch for this specific format.
The company has already been testing conventional advertising within ChatGPT. Those ads support free and lower-cost access, while Plus, Pro and Business users do not see ads under OpenAI’s current policy.
Therefore, the visual test represents an expansion of an advertising system that OpenAI began developing earlier this year.
OpenAI Expands Advertising Measurement
Alongside the visual format, OpenAI is expanding tools that help advertisers measure campaign performance. The company has added integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for conversion data.
In addition, OpenAI is working with measurement companies including Haus, Measured and WorkMagic. It also supports attribution through firms such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, and Airbridge. Triple Whale will provide analytics for e-commerce advertisers.
These partnerships address a key requirement for advertisers. Brands need to understand whether ChatGPT campaigns lead to website visits, purchases, app installations or other actions.
Moreover, OpenAI says its advertising measurement approach supports both internal and partner-led measurement. This gives advertisers more options for connecting ChatGPT campaigns with existing marketing systems.
The company is also developing additional approaches to brand suitability. As a result, advertisers will have more tools to understand where their campaigns appear and how they perform.
A Broader Advertising Strategy
OpenAI’s latest move reflects the growing importance of advertising to its consumer business. The company says advertising can help expand access to AI by generating revenue beyond subscriptions.
At the same time, the visual format offers advertisers another way to reach users. Instead of relying solely on text, brands can use images to showcase products and services in an AI-driven experience.
The approach also raises questions about how advertising will fit into creative workflows. Users may increasingly encounter sponsored content while asking ChatGPT for shopping ideas, design concepts or visual inspiration.
For now, OpenAI is keeping the test limited. The company plans to begin with selected U.S. advertisers later this month, while maintaining a separation between sponsored content and generated images.
Consequently, the October test will provide an early indication of how visual advertising performs inside an AI image-generation environment. It may also shape how OpenAI develops advertising formats across ChatGPT in the future.
