Microsoft Plans 38GW Data Center Expansion

Microsoft plans to more than triple its global data center capacity by 2032, according to a Bloomberg report cited by Reuters. The company could reach about 38 gigawatts of capacity, up from roughly 12 gigawatts today.

The expansion reflects rising demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing. However, Microsoft has already faced capacity constraints that have limited its ability to serve some AI and cloud customers.

For the UAE and wider GCC, the move highlights the infrastructure scale required to support the next phase of AI adoption. Microsoft already operates Azure regions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, giving regional customers access to local cloud infrastructure.

Microsoft Targets 38GW Data Center Capacity

Microsoft’s planned network would exceed 38GW by 2032. That represents more than three times its current footprint. The plan includes both company-owned and leased facilities, according to people familiar with the plans.

Meanwhile, AI-focused capacity would also increase significantly. About 2GW of Microsoft’s current 12GW footprint uses AI-specific chips. By 2032, AI capacity could represent roughly one-third of the planned 38GW network.

Microsoft has already been expanding rapidly. During its latest fiscal quarter, the company added 31 data centers across five continents. It also brought another gigawatt of capacity online.

Furthermore, Microsoft says it remains on track to roughly double its overall capacity within two years. The company has also reduced the time needed to bring new GPUs online in its largest regions by nearly 50%.

The expansion supports Microsoft’s Azure cloud business and its growing portfolio of AI products. Those include Copilot and AI services built on Microsoft’s cloud platform.

AI Demand Drives Infrastructure Expansion

Microsoft expects to spend heavily on infrastructure as AI usage grows. The company said it expects roughly $190 billion in capital expenditure during calendar 2026.

However, the spending extends beyond GPUs. Microsoft’s infrastructure strategy includes CPUs, networking, storage, custom accelerators and data center facilities. The company is also deploying its own Maia AI accelerators alongside chips from Nvidia and AMD.

Microsoft is also improving the efficiency of its existing infrastructure. For example, it reported a fourfold increase in throughput for Copilot workloads since the beginning of 2026.

The company nevertheless expects capacity constraints to continue through 2026. As demand for AI workloads accelerates, expanding physical infrastructure remains a major priority.

Implications for the UAE and GCC

Microsoft’s expansion is particularly relevant to the UAE. The company operates Azure infrastructure in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, supporting customers that require local cloud services and data residency.

The UAE is also seeing rapid enterprise AI adoption. Microsoft reported that the country led its global AI diffusion ranking in the first quarter of 2026, with AI usage reaching 70.1% of the working-age population.

Moreover, regional organizations are increasingly relying on Azure for AI workloads. Dubai-based Al-Futtaim, for example, built a data platform using Azure, Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric.

Similarly, Emirates Global Aluminum has moved part of its server infrastructure to Azure and Azure Local. The company uses the hybrid environment for industrial AI and other data-intensive applications.

Consequently, Microsoft’s global capacity push could strengthen the infrastructure supporting AI services across major markets. For the UAE and GCC, it also underlines the growing importance of local data centers, power availability and high-performance computing capacity.

Microsoft’s planned 38GW footprint therefore represents more than a conventional cloud expansion. It signals how rapidly AI is reshaping the scale, cost and energy requirements of global digital infrastructure.
