Apple is preparing a new Mac mini desktop computer, according to people familiar with the matter.
The update could arrive within days. Therefore, Apple may unveil it before its expected September iPhone event.
Mac Mini Upgrade and Product Expansion
Apple has tested Mac mini versions using both M5 and M6 processors. Meanwhile, demand for the current model has surged.
The desktop has become popular for running artificial intelligence applications locally. However, memory-chip shortages have made it harder to keep the product in stock.
A spokesperson for Cupertino, California-based Apple declined to comment.
The updated Mac mini forms part of a wider product rollout planned for the second half of this year. Later this week, Apple is expected to send invitations for its iPhone launch event.
That presentation will likely take place on Sept. 9. It may introduce Apple’s first foldable smartphone and the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Additionally, Apple is preparing new Apple Watch models with modest design changes. These updates could include improved fitness tracking and a ceramic case for Series 12 models.
Apple may also introduce new AirPods during the September event. The AirPods 5 will update the company’s entry-level earbuds, which last received a refresh in 2024.
However, a camera-equipped AirPods model is not expected until next year. Apple is also preparing a smart home device with a screen for release this year.
The device will use facial recognition to identify users. As a result, it could display personalised content for each household member.
Apple is also developing a new Apple TV set-top box and HomePod mini speaker. Furthermore, a redesigned iPad mini with an OLED display should arrive by the end of October.
OLED technology provides a sharper picture than the current tablet display. Therefore, the new iPad mini could appear more similar to Apple’s premium iPad models.
Future Macs and Leadership Change
Apple is preparing additional Mac models, although they may arrive later. These products include an iMac with new colour options and a refreshed entry-level MacBook Pro.
Both models will use upcoming M6 processors. Meanwhile, Apple is developing its first touchscreen Mac computer.
The touchscreen feature will arrive on new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Those computers will also receive redesigned cases and OLED displays.
The Mac mini will likely be the final major product launched under Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook. Cook is handing the reins to John Ternus on Sept. 1.
Ternus will oversee the foldable iPhone and other major products in Apple’s development pipeline.
Looking ahead to 2027, Apple is planning several additional products:
- Updates to the entry-level iPad and iPad Air
- New MacBook Air and MacBook Neo models
- Second-generation touchscreen MacBooks with upcoming M7 chips
- A second-generation foldable iPhone
- An iPhone with curved glass for its 20-year anniversary
Apple is also expanding its artificial-intelligence wearable strategy. The company plans to begin with camera-equipped AirPods.
Afterward, Apple aims to introduce smart glasses that would compete with Meta’s products. It has also tested a camera-equipped pendant that could send visual data to iPhones for AI processing.
Supply Chain and US Manufacturing
The Mac mini has created significant supply-chain difficulties in recent months. Consequently, some customers have faced delivery waits lasting weeks or months.
Cook said the problem would take a while to resolve. However, it remains unclear whether the new model will reduce or extend delivery times.
The Mac mini also supports Apple’s plan to increase manufacturing in the United States. Earlier this year, Apple promised to begin producing the computer in Houston later in 2026.
Cook toured the factory this month with Trump administration officials. Domestic manufacturing remains a major priority for the administration.
Apple previously assembled the Mac Pro in the United States. However, the company discontinued that model earlier this year.
