Google Maps Adds AI-Powered Food Ordering Through Ask Maps

Google Maps AI food ordering

Google Maps has introduced AI-powered food ordering through Ask Maps, its Gemini-based conversational feature. As a result, users can now discover nearby restaurants and place food orders using natural language. The update also makes one merchant platform among the first supported services that allows purchases directly through the AI-powered experience.

How AI Food Ordering Works

Users in the United States can open Ask Maps and describe what they want to eat in everyday language. For example, they can search for vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte near their location. The AI then recommends nearby restaurants that match the request.

After selecting a restaurant, users can tap “Order online” to complete their purchase through supported services, including Square, Toast, or Uber Eats. Next, Ask Maps adds the selected items to the cart, while payment is completed on the partner platform.

Additionally, the feature allows restaurant merchants to gain visibility through conversational AI instead of relying only on traditional search results or third-party delivery apps. Earlier, the platform supported “Order with Google” for Search and Maps. However, the new integration shifts toward AI-driven commerce by recommending merchants based on user conversations and preferences.

AI Commerce Expands Beyond Food

The food ordering feature forms part of a broader expansion of AI-powered services. Besides restaurant orders, Ask Maps now supports hotel bookings and event ticket discovery. Furthermore, the platform introduces Personal Intelligence, allowing it to use information from Gmail and Google Calendar to deliver more personalized recommendations, such as suggesting restaurants near an upcoming hotel stay.

Ask Maps first launched in March 2026 as a conversational search experience within Google Maps in the United States and India. Although early signs of the food ordering feature appeared in July, the latest update marks its official public rollout with supported commerce partners.

Benefits for Restaurant Merchants

The expanded integration gives restaurant merchants another way to reach potential customers. Instead of depending solely on third-party delivery marketplaces, businesses can receive orders directly through AI-powered recommendations. Consequently, the feature creates another customer acquisition channel while reducing reliance on commission-based delivery platforms.
