Elon Musk Envisions Robots Building Factories on the Moon
Elon Musk has shared a long-term vision of sending autonomous robots to the Moon to build factories and industrial infrastructure before human astronauts arrive. He presented the idea during the company’s first public earnings call and acknowledged that the concept may sound futuristic. However, he argued that robotic construction on the Moon will eventually become a reality.
Robots Could Prepare the Moon for Human Missions
According to Musk, autonomous robots would assemble infrastructure, maintain equipment, and process lunar resources before astronauts reach the Moon. As a result, future missions could reduce their dependence on human labor in the harsh lunar environment.
“It sounds super sci-fi right now, but it’s going to happen,” Musk said, adding that the effort could eventually expand Earth’s economy by as much as 1,000 times.
Additionally, Musk discussed the possibility of building a solar-powered mass accelerator on the Moon. The system could launch cargo into space without relying on conventional rockets. He also noted that autonomous robots would play a key role in constructing both the accelerator and its supporting infrastructure. Furthermore, he described satellites as robots because they already operate independently without regular servicing.
The company did not confirm whether Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots would take part in the project. Likewise, it did not provide a timeline or financial roadmap for the proposed lunar initiative.
AI Partnership and Future Plans
Alongside the Moon manufacturing vision, the company announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop Starmind AI-1, an orbital data center satellite powered by Nvidia’s Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. The first Starmind satellites are expected to launch next year, while prototype testing is planned for early 2027.
“We think the Vera Rubin architecture is the best AI computer,” Musk said, calling Nvidia a key strategic partner.
The earnings call also marked the company’s first since its public listing in June. During the quarter, it reported $7.8 billion in revenue and a net loss of $541 million. Although the Moon factory proposal attracted widespread attention, the company has not indicated when development will begin.
