Huawei Unveils 798g MateBook Pro S With New Kirin Chips
Huawei has previewed two premium laptops and two new PC processors before its August 5 launch event. As a result, the company continues to strengthen its in-house hardware and software ecosystem while reducing reliance on Western technologies.
The highlight is the MateBook Pro S, a 14-inch laptop weighing just 798 grams. Consequently, it is about 35% lighter than Apple’s MacBook Air M5 and nearly 200 grams lighter than the LG Gram 14. The laptop also measures only 11.2 mm thick and features a magnesium-lithium alloy chassis.
New Kirin Chips Power Latest Laptops
The MateBook Pro S runs on the new Kirin XE90 processor, a 10-core ARM chip with a 2.45 GHz clock speed. According to Huawei, the processor delivers 23% higher single-core performance, 25% better energy efficiency, and 40% greater NPU computing power than the first-generation Kirin X90. Additionally, the chip uses ceramic composite heat dissipation packaging to improve thermal performance by 70%.
Meanwhile, the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design features the higher-performance Kirin X90 Plus processor. Huawei says the chip uses a more advanced manufacturing process than the standard Kirin X90. Furthermore, the company demonstrated hardware-level ray tracing running within the HarmonyOS environment.
HarmonyOS, Battery Improvements, and Availability
Huawei claims the MateBook Pro S can deliver up to 18 hours of video playback. The company attributes this performance to an ultrabook battery featuring a 10% high-silicon anode, which provides 15% greater energy density than conventional battery cells. However, it has not disclosed the battery capacity in watt-hours, and actual battery life may vary during everyday use.
Both laptops will run HarmonyOS instead of Windows 11. Additionally, the MateBook Pro S will be available in five color options with 16GB or 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage.
The new devices are expected to go on sale in China shortly after the August 5 launch event. However, Huawei has not confirmed broader international availability.
