Amazon Targets Satellite-to-iPhone Connectivity Expansion

Amazon is preparing to launch a constellation of more than 5,000 low Earth orbit satellites to provide direct-to-device connectivity for smartphones, including iPhones. The company has filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking approval for the new satellite network, which will support voice calls, messaging, data services, and emergency communications in areas without traditional cellular coverage. Consequently, Amazon is expanding beyond broadband internet into the rapidly growing satellite-to-phone market.

The proposed network, known as Amazon Leo, builds on the company’s existing satellite initiative formerly called Project Kuiper. Moreover, Amazon plans to deploy the new constellation beginning in 2028 while partnering with mobile network operators worldwide to deliver seamless connectivity. The expansion follows Amazon’s acquisition of Globalstar, whose satellite spectrum already supports emergency satellite features on Apple’s iPhones.

Amazon Expands Satellite Ambitions

Amazon’s FCC filing outlines a constellation of up to 5,105 satellites operating across five orbital shells between approximately 510 and 580 kilometers above Earth. Therefore, the company expects to provide dense coverage in populated regions while extending service to remote and polar areas. Unlike conventional satellite internet, the system is designed to connect directly with compatible smartphones without requiring dedicated satellite terminals.

The service will support voice, messaging, mobile data, and emergency communications through partnerships with wireless carriers. In addition, Amazon plans to process signals in orbit to improve network performance and reliability. These capabilities position the company to compete directly with SpaceX’s Starlink, AST SpaceMobile, and other providers pursuing direct-to-device satellite connectivity.

iPhone Support and Industry Competition

Amazon’s acquisition of Globalstar provides access to spectrum already used for Apple’s satellite-based emergency services. As a result, the company is expected to extend satellite connectivity for future iPhone users through broader voice and data capabilities beginning in 2028, subject to regulatory approvals and commercial agreements.

Meanwhile, Amazon continues expanding its existing satellite infrastructure. The company currently has nearly 400 broadband satellites in orbit and plans to launch thousands more over the coming years. Furthermore, it has secured launch agreements with Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance, ArianeGroup, and SpaceX to accelerate deployment.

Therefore, the planned constellation represents one of the company’s largest investments in space-based communications and intensifies its rivalry with Starlink in the emerging direct-to-device market.
