SpaceX Reschedules Starship Test Flight After Engine Abort

SpaceX has pushed its next Starship launch attempt to Thursday, July 23, following a last-second abort during the rocket’s previous test flight. The company made the decision after engineers identified an engine issue during ignition. Consequently, SpaceX has updated the propulsion system before scheduling another launch.

The aborted mission marked the 13th planned test flight for Starship, the company’s fully reusable launch system. Although launch delays are common during development, the incident drew attention because it occurred just seconds before liftoff.

Propulsion Updates Aim to Improve Reliability

SpaceX said it modified Starship’s propulsion system to address the engine issue that halted the previous launch attempt. Therefore, the company expects the updated vehicle to be ready for another test later this week.

During the upcoming mission, Starship will carry 20 next-generation Starlink satellites. However, the satellites will not remain in orbit. Instead, they will demonstrate Starlink’s satellite deployment system and laser communication capabilities before following a suborbital trajectory and burning up during atmospheric reentry.

SpaceX has completed 12 Starship test flights since 2023. Moreover, each mission has contributed new engineering data as the company works toward full reusability and operational satellite launches.

Starship Remains Central to SpaceX’s Future Plans

Starship plays a key role in SpaceX’s long-term launch strategy. Accordingly, the company plans to begin deploying Starlink satellites into orbit using Starship before the end of the year, followed by routine operational missions.

The recent launch abort also affected investor sentiment, with SpaceX’s valuation falling sharply after the incident. Nevertheless, the company continues to advance the estimated $15 billion Starship program through iterative testing and hardware upgrades. As the next launch window approaches, engineers will focus on validating the propulsion changes and demonstrating the vehicle’s satellite deployment capabilities.
