WhatsApp Launches Private Incognito Chat for Meta AI Conversations

WhatsApp Incognito Chat Meta AI interface

WhatsApp has launched a new Incognito Chat feature that allows users to hold temporary private conversations with Meta AI. The company says these chats remain inaccessible even to its own systems.

The feature uses Private Processing technology to create a secure environment for AI interactions. As a result, messages are not stored and disappear automatically once the session ends.

If users close the app or lock their phone, the session ends immediately. Consequently, the AI loses all conversation context and cannot continue the discussion later.

“Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private — no one can read your conversation, not even us,” the company wrote in a blog post announcing the feature.

How the feature works

Users can activate Incognito Chat by tapping a new icon inside one-on-one conversations with Meta AI. Additionally, the feature will expand to the standalone Meta AI app in the coming months.

For now, the experience supports text-only conversations. Therefore, users cannot upload or generate images during incognito sessions.

The AI also includes built-in safety protections. For example, it may decline certain requests or redirect harmful questions toward useful information.

Users must also confirm their age before accessing the feature. This requirement aligns with existing platform restrictions for younger users.

The feature reportedly runs on Meta’s latest Muse Spark AI model, which launched last month.

Privacy focus and future plans

The launch arrives as AI privacy concerns continue to grow. While standard personal WhatsApp conversations remain protected through end-to-end encryption, interactions with Meta AI outside Incognito Chat may still help improve AI systems.

Therefore, this feature appears designed to address growing concerns about data use in AI conversations.

Meta also plans to expand private AI interactions further. In the coming months, the company will introduce Side Chat, a feature that lets users privately interact with Meta AI inside any WhatsApp conversation without other participants seeing the exchange.

“Since we started exploring bringing AI to WhatsApp, we’ve been focused on how to deliver this power privately, at a global scale,” the company wrote.
