Android 17 Introduces Gemini AI-Powered Smart Features
Google introduced a broad range of Android 17 updates during The Android Show: I/O Edition. Moreover, the company placed artificial intelligence at the center of the new experience through its Gemini Intelligence platform. The rollout will first target Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices over the coming months.
Gemini Moves Beyond Chat Assistance
Android 17 shifts Gemini from a conversational assistant into an active task automation system. Users can now assign multi-step actions across apps, including booking fitness classes, ordering groceries, and finding travel options from brochure images. Meanwhile, Gemini continues those tasks in the background and only requests confirmation for sensitive actions such as payments.
In addition, Chrome for Android will receive Gemini integration later in June. The new auto browse feature can complete tasks directly from browser content, including parking reservations linked to event tickets. Google will also add article summaries and infographic generation tools for web pages. However, some advanced browsing capabilities will require AI Pro or AI Ultra subscriptions in the United States.
Widgets, Smarter Voice Input, and Wellbeing Tools
Android 17 also introduces AI-generated home screen widgets. Users can describe a widget in plain language, and Gemini creates it within seconds. Furthermore, the feature will support Gemini Intelligence smartphones and Wear OS devices.
Google also upgraded Gboard with a new voice dictation tool called Rambler. The system handles pauses, corrections, and multilingual speech patterns more naturally. As a result, dictation produces cleaner and more accurate text. At the same time, Gemini-powered Autofill can complete detailed forms using information from connected apps, although the feature remains optional.
Digital wellbeing tools also received major updates. Pause Point adds a 10-second delay before opening distracting apps. During that pause, users can access breathing exercises, set usage timers, or switch to another application. Additionally, disabling the feature requires a device restart, adding intentional friction to reduce impulsive app use.
Creator Features and Wider Android Expansion
Google also announced several creator-focused improvements for Android devices. Instagram on Android will support enhanced camera quality with ultra HDR, NightSight, and built-in stabilization through collaboration with Meta. Meanwhile, Adobe Premiere will arrive on Android later this summer.
The company also revealed Screen Reactions, which allows users to record reaction videos directly from their phones. In addition, Quick Share is expanding to more device brands and will function inside apps such as WhatsApp.
Google plans to reveal additional Android 17 features during Google I/O 2026, which begins on May 19.
