Google Launches AI-Powered Googlebook Laptop to Replace Chromebooks
Google has introduced the Googlebook, a new AI-focused laptop category designed around Gemini artificial intelligence. As a result, the launch marks one of the company’s biggest laptop strategy changes in more than a decade.
The new platform runs on an Android-based operating system that combines the Chrome browser with Android apps from the Google Play Store. Additionally, the company says Gemini will deliver contextual and proactive assistance throughout the user experience.
Several major hardware partners are expected to release Googlebook devices later this year, signaling broad ecosystem support for the new platform.
Gemini powers smarter laptop experiences
One of the standout features is Magic Pointer, an AI-enhanced cursor designed to understand on-screen context and assist users more intelligently. Therefore, routine navigation and interactions could become faster and more intuitive.
Google also introduced “Create your Widget,” which allows users to generate custom widgets through natural language prompts. Moreover, Gemini can pull information from connected services such as Gmail and Google Calendar to create personalized dashboards.
The platform will also integrate deeply with Android smartphones. Consequently, users will be able to run phone apps directly on their laptops without installing them locally.
A long-term shift beyond Chromebooks
The Googlebook reflects the company’s broader effort to merge ChromeOS and Android into a unified computing platform. While this launch signals a major transition, existing ChromeOS users will continue receiving long-term support.
The company has committed to maintaining ChromeOS support through at least 2033. Meanwhile, broader public rollout timelines for the unified platform may still evolve.
More technical details are expected at the upcoming developer conference, where the company is also likely to reveal updates related to Gemini, Android 17, and extended reality hardware.
Overall, the Googlebook positions AI as the center of the laptop experience rather than an added feature.
