Dubai Advances Smart Waterway Mapping for Smarter Urban Planning

Dubai smart waterway mapping project

Dubai Municipality has completed the Middle East’s first pilot project for surveying waterways and canals using advanced mobile mapping technology.

The project used the Leica TRK system mounted on a specially equipped vessel. As a result, survey teams captured accurate geospatial data across Dubai’s waterways.

Moreover, the initiative supports Dubai’s wider push to use advanced technology for stronger digital infrastructure. It also strengthens the emirate’s geospatial ecosystem, which ranks among the world’s most advanced.

Pilot project supports digital infrastructure

The pilot project covered surveying work across the Dubai Water Canal in Al Jaddaf. During the operation, specialist teams captured highly detailed spatial datasets and developed high-precision 3D models.

In addition, the project creates wider opportunities for using advanced geospatial data in infrastructure planning. It can improve asset management, support better maintenance decisions, and strengthen sustainable urban planning.

According to Dubai Municipality, the project also aligns with international best practices. Therefore, it can help government entities manage urban systems with greater accuracy and efficiency.

Eng. Maitha Alnuaimi, Director of the GIS Centre Department at Dubai Municipality, said:

“This initiative forms part of Dubai Municipality’s ongoing efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure by developing an integrated geospatial database that supports the emirate’s Digital Twin project and enables government entities to make accurate and timely decisions based on reliable data. The project further reinforces Dubai’s readiness and leadership as a smart and future-focused city while enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of urban management systems.”

Wider rollout planned across the emirate

Dubai Municipality will continue expanding surveying operations across the emirate’s waterways. Meanwhile, it will coordinate with relevant authorities to prepare for the project’s next operational phase.

Furthermore, the initiative will support the wider use of smart systems across Dubai. It will also strengthen urban planning, infrastructure management, and digital governance capabilities.

Overall, the project reflects Dubai’s focus on future-ready city management. Through advanced mapping and reliable data, the emirate aims to improve decision-making and build more sustainable urban systems.
