Instagram is introducing stricter protections for teenage users across the Middle East and North Africa. As part of this rollout, the platform automatically places users under 18 into a 13+ content setting. Therefore, teenagers will see age-appropriate content by default.

Previously, similar measures were launched in regions such as the US and UK. Now, the expansion reflects a broader effort to standardize safety features globally. In addition, teenagers cannot switch to less restrictive settings without parental approval.

Stricter Content Filters and Interaction Limits

Under the updated system, Instagram expands its content filtering mechanisms. For example, it now limits exposure to strong language, risky stunts, and harmful behavior. Moreover, these restrictions apply across Explore, Reels, Feed, and Stories.

At the same time, the platform restricts interactions with accounts that share inappropriate content. Consequently, such accounts cannot follow, message, or engage with teenage users. In addition, teenagers will no longer view or interact with content from these accounts.

Furthermore, Instagram broadens its search restrictions. It already blocks searches related to self-harm and eating disorders. However, it now extends limits to include alcohol-related and graphic content terms, even when misspelled.

Parental Controls and AI Adjustments

Meanwhile, Instagram introduces a Limited Content setting for additional parental control. This option applies stricter filters and reduces exposure to sensitive material. As a result, teenagers may also lose access to commenting features under certain conditions.

In parallel, the platform updates its AI systems to align with these new safety guidelines. Therefore, AI-generated responses now follow age-appropriate standards. Additionally, restricted content shared through direct messages will not open for teenage users.

Overall, the rollout is progressing across the MENA region and will continue in phases. As scrutiny on social media safety increases, platforms are strengthening safeguards for younger audiences.
