Alibaba Cloud has propelled its Qwen AI models to the top of the global open-source ecosystem, capturing more than 50% of total downloads by March 2026. In fact, the models reached nearly 1 billion cumulative downloads on Hugging Face, significantly outperforming competitors like Meta Platforms and OpenAI.
Notably, February alone accounted for 153.6 million downloads, which exceeded the combined total of several major rivals. This surge followed the release of Qwen 3.5, which reportedly matches the performance of leading AI systems from Anthropic and others. As a result, Qwen has rapidly become a preferred choice among developers worldwide.
Small Models Drive Massive Adoption
Moreover, Qwen’s dominance stems largely from its smaller-parameter models, particularly those under 10 billion parameters. These versions allow developers to customize and deploy solutions at lower costs, making them highly accessible. Consequently, adoption accelerated after the release of Qwen 2.5 in 2024, marking a shift away from models like Llama.
Since then, Chinese-developed AI models have consistently led global open-source downloads. Meanwhile, Qwen’s ecosystem has expanded significantly, now including nearly 400 models that support 119 languages and dialects. In addition, developers worldwide have created over 200,000 derivative models, further strengthening its influence.
Strategic Shift Toward Monetization
However, the company now appears to be pivoting toward monetization. Reports indicate a growing focus on revenue generation, even as open-source contributions continue. For instance, new initiatives include the launch of Wukong, an enterprise-focused AI platform, alongside notable cloud price increases.
At the same time, internal restructuring has consolidated AI efforts under a unified business group, signaling a long-term strategic shift. This move follows a sharp decline in quarterly net profit, which has increased pressure to generate returns from AI investments.
Importantly, CEO Eddie Wu emphasized that AI “is and will continue to be one of our primary growth engines,” while highlighting that Qwen’s consumer platform has surpassed 300 million monthly active users. Therefore, although open-source development remains part of the strategy, the company is clearly prioritizing sustainable revenue growth through its expanding AI ecosystem.
