Snapchat Launches Topic Chats to Boost Public Conversations

Snapchat is expanding beyond private messaging with the launch of “Topic Chats,” a feature designed to support public conversations around trending interests. Although the platform has historically centered on private exchanges, the new tool encourages users to discuss everything from Formula 1 to reality TV.

Profiles remain private to prevent unwanted messages, and display names appear without linking to user profiles. As a result, participants can engage openly while maintaining anonymity and control.

Safety Systems and Discovery

Snapchat is implementing LLM-powered moderation and additional safety layers to keep Topic Chats appropriate. Messages must follow Community Guidelines, and users can report unsafe behavior. Furthermore, the company will take disciplinary action when necessary.

Friends can also see which Topic Chats others have joined, which increases the chance of discovering shared interests. Topic Chats include related Spotlight videos, making it easier to explore more content within the conversation.

Rollout and Message Visibility

The new feature is being introduced across Canada, New Zealand, and the United States over the coming weeks. Topic Chats will appear in Chat shortcuts, search, the Stories page, and on Spotlight videos. When users see a large yellow “Join the Chat” button, they can tap it to enter a room centered on a shared topic. Messages sent in Topic Chats will be stored for up to five years, although private profiles ensure continued user protection.
