Spotify Introduces In-App Messaging to Boost Music and Podcast Sharing

Spotify in-app messaging feature

Spotify is introducing Messages, a one-to-one DM feature within its app. Previously, users could share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks only through other messaging apps or social networks. This new feature allows recommendations to flow seamlessly without leaving the Spotify platform.

The feature is designed to streamline interactions and make sharing content easier within the app. Users can now communicate directly with friends, family, or collaborators while keeping all music and podcast activity centralised.

How Messages Work

Messages allows users to share content and start conversations with people they have previously interacted with on Spotify. Suggested contacts include participants in Jams, Blends, and Collaborative Playlists, as well as Family or Duo plan members. Once a message request is accepted, recipients can respond with emoji or text.

Users can accept or reject message requests and block accounts if necessary. The platform uses proactive detection technology to scan messages for unlawful or harmful content, and moderators review reported content. All Messages are protected with industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest.

Getting Started

To send a message, tap the share icon in the “Now Playing” view, select a contact, and hit “send.” Messages can be accessed via the profile photo in the top left corner of the app. The feature complements other sharing options on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok.

With Messages, Spotify aims to increase engagement and make sharing music, podcasts, and audiobooks more interactive and centralised.
