Apple’s Smart Home Hub Could Arrive by Year-End

Apple's rumoured smart home hub with 7-inch display and camera.

After several delays, Apple’s long-rumoured smart home hub may finally see the light of day. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device is now expected to launch by the end of 2025. This smart hub, internally codenamed J490, will reportedly feature a 7-inch square display, a built-in camera, and a rechargeable battery. It is also set to introduce a new operating system, called homeOS, and will support Apple Intelligence, Apple’s latest AI system.

Previously slated for a spring release, the launch faced setbacks due to complications in Apple’s AI development. Siri and App Intents were supposed to be fully integrated with iOS 18.4, but technical challenges delayed their release. Apple even confirmed this, stating new Siri features would roll out “in the coming year.” Despite these issues, internal testing began earlier this year, allowing select employees to try the device at home. This suggests the company is actively pushing to finalise the product.

A Simpler Device First, Advanced Version Later

While Apple has ambitious plans for a more advanced hub, that version will take longer to arrive. The premium model codenamed J595 is said to include a robotic arm and a “unique AI personality.” However, to meet deadlines, Apple has removed some of its more complex features. Gurman notes these may return in future upgrades.

Meanwhile, the basic model focuses on usability and affordability. It will combine elements of watchOS and the iPhone’s StandBy mode to offer a dynamic dashboard. This hybrid interface is designed to make controlling smart home devices easier and more intuitive.

Apple Eyes the Smart Home Market Again

Despite competition from Amazon and Google, Apple is not giving up on the smart home space. With this upcoming launch, the company hopes to regain some of the market share it has lost over the years. Apple’s approach seems to prioritise seamless integration with its existing ecosystem, which could give it a distinct advantage.

If the J490 device launches as planned, it will be Apple’s first major entry into the smart home hub category. And while it may not boast every feature from the start, it could still mark the beginning of a new product category for Apple one that blends AI, design, and connectivity in a compact package.
