Abu Dhabi to Build Three Vertiports for Flying Taxis, Set to Launch in 2026

The UAE is taking a major step toward urban air mobility with the construction of three vertiports in key locations: Al Bateen, Yas Island, and Khalifa Port. The vertiports, designated for the takeoff, landing, and servicing of flying taxis, are expected to be operational by 2026.

The announcement was made at the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) by LODD, an Abu Dhabi-based company specializing in AI-powered drone technology, and Skyports Infrastructure, a leader in advanced air mobility (AAM).

Revolutionizing Air Mobility in Abu Dhabi

LODD and Skyports Infrastructure emphasized that the development of vertiport networks will enable the smooth operation of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and autonomous aerial logistics in the UAE.

“Building vertiports represents a significant step toward integrating unmanned aerial mobility into Abu Dhabi’s public transportation system,” said Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD. “These vertiports will lay the foundation for a future-ready air mobility network, supporting both commercial eVTOL passenger services and autonomous aerial logistics.”

The three planned vertiports in Abu Dhabi will not only improve inter-city connectivity but also open up potential routes between different locations across the UAE.

Dubai’s First Commercial Vertiport

This announcement follows Dubai’s unveiling of its first commercial vertiport in January 2024, called Dubai International Vertiport (DXV). The DXV is the first of four sites being developed in collaboration with Skyports Infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and Joby Aviation. The additional three vertiports in Dubai are expected to be operational by Q1 2026, in Downtown Dubai, Palm Jumeirah, and Dubai Marina.

Advancing Aerial Mobility in the UAE

“The signing of an MOU highlights the progress being made to define and develop Abu Dhabi’s advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure network,” said Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports. “As our vertiport concept designs show, cargo is just as important as passenger operations. The development of a comprehensive passenger and cargo network will enable us to bring wide-ranging benefits to the emirate, for both people and businesses.”

With eVTOL technology rapidly advancing, Abu Dhabi’s commitment to developing vertiports signals a strong move toward a smart, sustainable transportation ecosystem. The UAE is positioning itself as a global leader in the future of urban air mobility.
