Netflix premium upgrade brings spatial audio and increased download devices

Netflix has added spatial audio support to its Premium plan, offering high-fidelity audio enthusiasts a rich, cinematic sound experience on any device without the need for additional equipment. The addition of spatial audio, which is now available on over 700 titles including popular shows such as Stranger Things and Knives Out, is accompanied by a “spatial audio” icon to help customers easily identify compatible content.

In addition to the introduction of the spatial audio, the Netflix Premium plan now also allows for downloads on up to six devices simultaneously, an increase from the previous limit of four. The Premium plan already includes access to enhanced Dolby Atmos audio and 4K resolution with HDR/Dolby Vision on compatible devices.

Netflix’s move to enhance its Premium plan comes after the introduction of its cheapest Basic with Ads plan last fall. By offering new features such as support for spatial audio, the company aims to convince more users to upgrade and differentiate itself from competing streaming services, such as Disney+ or Apple TV+, that may not restrict 4K resolution or HDR to a premium tier.

In addition, Netflix has started to address the issue of password sharing by using IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to identify devices within a household. Non-household members will be required to periodically authenticate their devices.
