WhatsApp gets new features on desktop and iOS apps

WhatsApp has a couple of new features in its lineup, a look into its latest beta versions has hinted. If a recent report highlighting the findings is to be believed, WhatsApp may soon update its WhatsApp Desktop app with a new feature, as well as introduce new functionality to its app for iPhone users.

The first of these features is coming to WhatsApp Desktop, the standalone WhatsApp app meant to be used on Windows and Macs, not to be confused with the WhatsApp Web that opens on a web browser. A new report by WABetaInfo suggests that the app is soon getting one of its lost functionalities back, the ability to generate preview links.

For those unaware, know that WhatsApp is able to generate previews for links pasted within its chat windows. So if a user copies a link online and shares it with another, the chat is able to generate a preview for the link with a small thumbnail. The feature is present on the WhatsApp for Android and WhatsApp for iOS versions, while it was also seen on WhatsApp Desktop previously, before being removed from the version. The new report mentions its presence on a new beta version, suggesting that it will be coming back to the app soon.

Simultaneously, a new feature has also been seen on WhatsApp for iOS beta. The feature allows WhatsApp users on iPhones to use group polls. The users will be able to add a new poll to a group with up to 12 possible options within the poll. The feature has been seen on WhatsApp for iOS 22.8.0.72 beta update and now allows users to even change the position of the options. The feature is under development and we can expect to see it in a stable update soon.

WABetaInfo suggests that even the group polls feature should be protected by end-to-end encryption. This means that only the group participants will be able to see the poll and its results. Post-launch on iOS, we may also see it on WhatsApp for Android and WhatsApp Desktop.
