Qualcomm to launch new flagship processor Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ in May

Qualcomm might launch a new flagship processor in May this year, a recent hint by a noted tipster indicates. The chipset will come as a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and just as has been suspected for so long, will likely be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+. It is believed that Qualcomm is expecting a significant performance boost with this upgrade.

For these improvements, the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will be based on TSMC’s 4nm process, considered to have fewer chances of overheating than Samsung’s 4nm platform. An overall increase in performance is also anticipated with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ and the good news is that we may not have to wait for too long in order to see these upgrades.

The hint has been shared by tipster Yogesh Brar through a recent tweet, wherein he also mentions other Snapdragon chipsets that Qualcomm has in the works. In an OnSiteGo report that follows, Brar mentions that flagship phones based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ may be unveiled as soon as June this year. Lenovo and Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi have been listed as the first few customers of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ and should be out with their own phones soon after the chipset’s launch.

As per the report, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ has a model number of SM8475 and will be the first Qualcomm chip based on TSMC’s 4nm node. It will come as Qualcomm’s response to MediaTek’s recent Dimensity 9000 series chipsets, which are cheaper but equally at par with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors in terms of performance. Qualcomm may now be looking to regain its performance lead with its new flagship offering.

Other than the top-end offering from the house of Qualcomm, we may also see new chipsets under the Snapdragon 7-series. Brar mentions “some other chips” from Qualcomm underworks, which are meant to address the “mid and upper mid-range segment” of smartphones. In the following report, the processors are specified to be a part of the “Snapdragon 700 series.” The chipsets will be seen in phones around the same time as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+
