“365 Copilot” is set to bring AI capabilities to Word and Outlook

Microsoft has announced the launch of Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI tool designed to automate and accelerate tedious tasks such as creating PowerPoint presentations, analyzing sales data, and catching up on missed meetings. The tool, which uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology for natural language processing, is embedded within popular Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Outlook, Teams, and Excel. Copilot is being tested with 20 enterprise customers and is expected to be made available to a larger user base in the coming months, with no details released yet regarding potential additional costs.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said that the “next generation of AI will unlock a new wave of productivity,” with “copilots designed to remove the drudgery from our daily tasks and jobs.” Microsoft’s move to integrate AI into its workplace software comes after the launch of the new version of its search engine, Bing, which also incorporates ChatGPT, and Google’s recent announcement of adding AI into its Google Workspace.

However, experts have warned about potential issues with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, such as incorrect facts, misinterpreted text, or nonsensical content. They have also cautioned about sharing sensitive data with generative AI tools, which could repurpose the data to train its technology.

In response to these concerns, Microsoft has emphasized that workers can choose to review, edit, or discard results produced by Copilot, which follows the customer’s security, compliance, and privacy policies for Microsoft 365 and doesn’t use company data to train its systems.
