xAI Unveils $10 SuperGrok Lite as Musk Targets Sora Gap

AI video generation interface concept

xAI introduced a $10 SuperGrok Lite plan shortly after major changes shook the AI video space. At the same time, Elon Musk positioned the platform to capture growing demand for consumer AI video tools. “The next @Grok Imagine release will be epic. We are doubling down,” Musk posted on X on March 25, 2026.

Meanwhile, OpenAI announced it would shut down Sora just a day earlier. As a result, the company ended both the app and its API after a brief but high-profile run. It explained that it would redirect computing resources toward more profitable text and coding services. Additionally, a spokesperson said the Sora research team would pivot to “world simulation research aimed at improving robotics”.

However, the shutdown also disrupted a potential collaboration with The Walt Disney Company. Although discussions included a $1 billion investment and licensing deal, no formal agreement materialized. Disney said it would “continue to collaborate with AI platforms” while “responsibly adopting new technologies that honor intellectual property”.

Filling the Gap with New Offerings

In response, Musk moved quickly to expand Grok Imagine, an image and short video generation tool launched in 2025. Consequently, the platform now aims to attract users left behind by Sora’s exit. Reports indicate that upgrades to its video capabilities are already in progress.

Alongside this push, the company introduced SuperGrok Lite at $10 per month. This lower-cost tier targets casual users who want affordable access to generative tools. Specifically, it includes 480p video output, six-second clips, limited daily creations, and longer chat sessions.

Previously, higher-tier subscriptions offered broader capabilities at higher prices. However, this new plan lowers the barrier to entry, which could expand the user base significantly. At the same time, it reflects a strategy focused on accessibility rather than premium exclusivity.

Industry Direction and Competitive Divide

These developments highlight a growing divide in AI industry strategies. On one hand, some companies now prioritize enterprise-focused services over consumer tools. For example, Anthropic has strengthened its enterprise presence without releasing image or video models. As a result, its enterprise API share has grown rapidly in recent years.

On the other hand, Musk continues to invest in consumer-facing creative platforms. Therefore, this approach bets on sustained demand for accessible AI video and image tools. Still, questions remain about whether the platform can convert former Sora users into long-term subscribers.

At the same time, ongoing concerns around content moderation could shape adoption. Ultimately, the success of this strategy will depend on balancing innovation, accessibility, and responsible platform management.
