xAI Developing Grok “Skills” Feature to Enable AI Task Automation
Elon Musk’s xAI is developing a new “Skills” feature for its Grok chatbot. According to researcher Nima Owji, code references revealed the feature inside Grok’s web interface. As a result, users may soon create reusable instruction sets for specific tasks.
The feature, discovered on March 27, focuses on automating recurring workflows. For instance, users could define instructions for research, writing, or data analysis. Therefore, it extends beyond current custom instructions by introducing modular, task-specific configurations. In turn, this approach aims to make workflows more efficient and repeatable.
Building on Customization Features
This development follows the launch of Custom Agents earlier in March. With that update, users gained the ability to configure up to four distinct AI agents. However, the rollout also introduced trade-offs. For example, the platform removed Deep Research mode and Personas while reducing instruction limits.
Meanwhile, Skills would build on this foundation by adding another layer of flexibility. While Custom Agents focus on personalities and roles, Skills would handle repeatable tasks. Consequently, the system could evolve into a more structured personal AI platform. In addition, users would gain better control over how tasks are executed across sessions.
Competing in an AI-Driven Market
At the same time, competitors continue to expand similar features. For example, Anthropic has introduced Skills for its Claude assistant. Likewise, OpenAI offers Custom GPTs and Projects in ChatGPT. Additionally, Google has enhanced Gemini with deeper personalization.
Although no official release date exists, the feature appears to be in active development. Furthermore, recent platform changes suggest a broader shift in strategy. For instance, Grok now requires a premium subscription on X. Therefore, Skills may help justify that shift by offering more advanced personalization. Ultimately, the company seems to be aligning with an industry trend where customization is becoming essential.
