WhatsApp is experimenting with a motion photos feature for Android, allowing users to share short, audio-enabled image clips. These clips capture moments before and after a shot, offering a more immersive way to share memories.
The feature was spotted in the latest beta version, WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.22.29. It is currently rolling out to select testers via Google Play. Distribution may take a few days to reach everyone enrolled in the beta program.
How the Feature Works
Motion photos will appear with a dedicated icon a play button encircled by a ring and a small dot in the top-right corner. By tapping the icon, users can send an image with its recorded motion and sound intact.
The format works similarly to Samsung’s Motion Photos and Google Pixel’s Top Shot. Devices that already support motion photo capture can send them directly, while others can still view them. Currently, sending motion photos on WhatsApp converts them into video files, removing their original format. The update aims to keep the original experience intact.
Alongside motion photos, WhatsApp is developing a usernames feature. This will allow users to share a unique ID instead of a phone number, improving privacy and ease of connection. Both features remain in testing, with wider releases planned after further development and user feedback.
