WhatsApp explores usernames: Personalize your messaging experience

According to reports from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is said to be working on an upcoming feature called “WhatsApp usernames.” This feature aims to provide users with the ability to choose unique usernames for their accounts instead of solely relying on phone numbers for identification. By allowing users to opt for usernames, WhatsApp intends to offer a more personalized and memorable way for individuals to connect with each other on the platform.

The feature is expected to introduce a dedicated section within the app settings, specifically under WhatsApp Settings > Profile, where users can set up and manage their usernames. This functionality would grant users the convenience of contacting others by simply entering their chosen usernames within the app, eliminating the need to know their phone numbers. This has the potential to simplify communication and make it easier for users to connect with new contacts.

Moreover, the introduction of usernames also holds the promise of adding an extra layer of privacy for WhatsApp users. By using usernames instead of phone numbers, individuals can maintain a level of anonymity and control over their personal information. This feature is currently in the development phase and is anticipated to be released to beta testers in a future update of the app, allowing WhatsApp to gather feedback and further refine the feature before its official launch.

Additionally, in a separate announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that WhatsApp users will soon have the ability to edit their sent messages within a 15-minute window. This new editing feature aims to provide users with greater flexibility and control over their messaging experience. Users will be able to make changes to their sent messages by long-pressing on the message and selecting the “Edit” option from the menu. This functionality will be gradually rolled out to users worldwide over the coming weeks, empowering them to correct mistakes or update information in their conversations.
