Uber Expands Global Autonomous Vehicle Partnerships

Uber is rapidly transforming into a central platform for autonomous mobility by partnering with more than 30 self-driving vehicle companies instead of building its own robotaxis. The ride-hailing giant has shifted from developing in-house autonomous technology to connecting riders with fleets operated by specialized partners. Consequently, Uber is positioning itself as the marketplace for robotaxis, autonomous delivery vehicles, and self-driving trucks across multiple regions.

The strategy allows Uber to scale autonomous services without bearing the full cost of developing hardware and software. Moreover, the company has backed several autonomous driving startups through investments while integrating their vehicles into the Uber platform. These partnerships now span North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Global Partners Power Uber’s Robotaxi Ambitions

Uber’s largest autonomous vehicle partner remains Waymo, whose robotaxis already operate through the Uber app in several U.S. cities. Meanwhile, the company has expanded collaborations with WeRide, Avride, Wayve, Nuro, May Mobility, Pony.ai, Momenta, Motional, Serve Robotics, and Waabi. Therefore, Uber now supports robotaxis, autonomous trucks, and delivery robots through a broad ecosystem rather than a single technology provider.

The company has also strengthened ties with automakers. Earlier this year, Uber announced partnerships involving Lucid Motors, Rivian, Stellantis, and Wayve to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles on its platform. In addition, Uber works with Nvidia to support AI-powered autonomous driving systems. These collaborations combine vehicle manufacturing, self-driving software, and Uber’s global ride-hailing network.

Regional Expansion Accelerates Worldwide

Uber continues expanding autonomous rides into new markets. For example, WeRide now provides fully driverless robotaxi services through Uber in parts of Dubai after earlier launches in Abu Dhabi. Likewise, Avride operates autonomous robotaxis and delivery robots through Uber in selected U.S. cities, while May Mobility and Waymo continue expanding commercial deployments.

At the same time, Uber is growing beyond passenger transport. Autonomous delivery robots from Serve Robotics and Avride already handle Uber Eats deliveries in several cities. Furthermore, Uber Freight continues working with Waabi on self-driving trucking technology, extending automation into logistics. Consequently, Uber is creating a unified autonomous mobility ecosystem across ride-hailing, food delivery, and freight services.

Platform Strategy Replaces In-House Development

Uber sold its own self-driving division in 2020 and has since focused on becoming the operating platform for autonomous transportation. Therefore, instead of competing directly with autonomous technology developers, the company now connects multiple providers with millions of riders through a single application.

Industry analysts view this marketplace approach as a lower-risk path to large-scale autonomous mobility. As more partners launch commercial services, Uber expects its network to expand rapidly without owning every vehicle or developing every driving system itself. Consequently, the company’s growing alliance of autonomous technology firms could help establish one of the world’s largest robotaxi ecosystems over the coming years.
