UAE to utilize cloud seeding to enhance the yield of specific crops and address the issue of water scarcity

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is using cloud-seeding technology to address the issue of water scarcity, which poses a major challenge not only to the country but to the entire region. By enhancing the yield of specific crops, the UAE is aiming to increase the contribution of the agriculture sector to the country’s economy. Cloud-seeding technology has been in use in the UAE for several years, primarily to improve groundwater levels. In January 2023, the country carried out 13 cloud-seeding missions in a week, which resulted in heavy downpours over several days.

Sharif Salim Alolama, under-secretary for energy and petroleum affairs at the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, noted the importance of cloud-seeding for crop production and agricultural expansion. The process is monitored jointly by the authorities responsible for cloud-seeding and numerous farms located in the Northern Emirates.

In addition to cloud seeding, the UAE is also exploring other methods to enhance agricultural production. For example, Abu Dhabi recently opened the world’s largest indoor vertical farm for research and development, spreading over 65,000 sqft. Meanwhile, in November 2022, Sharjah launched a massive wheat farm in the Mleiha region, covering 400 hectares in its first phase. The second phase, slated to be completed by 2024, will expand the farm to 880 hectares, with a target of 1,400 hectares by 2025.

Speaking at the Arab Water Convention, Sharif Alolama stated that 50% of the total water supply in the UAE is derived from non-conventional resources, including water produced from desalination and treated water reuse. Furthermore, he indicated that the UAE plans to discuss enhanced cooperation with all stakeholders at COP28 in Dubai later this year.
