UAE Launches Etihad-SAT, Its First SAR Satellite Successfully

UAE’s first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, Etihad-SAT, launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has achieved another milestone in its space exploration journey with the successful launch of Etihad-SAT, the UAE’s first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. The satellite was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket at 10:43 AM UAE time. The Dubai ground station confirmed receipt of the first signal at 12:04 PM UAE time, marking a major step forward in the country’s space technology ambitions.

A Milestone in UAE’s Satellite Development Programme

Etihad-SAT represents a significant advancement in MBRSC’s Satellite Development Programme, being the first satellite developed by the Centre to feature SAR imaging technology. Unlike traditional optical satellites, SAR-equipped satellites can capture high-resolution images in all weather conditions and at any time of day or night, making them highly valuable for Earth observation and environmental monitoring.

The satellite’s launch aligns with the UAE’s strategic commitment to developing cutting-edge space solutions and enhancing national capabilities in the sector. According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), this achievement strengthens the UAE’s position as a leading nation in space science and technology.

Development and Collaboration with Satrec Initiative

Etihad-SAT was developed through a collaboration between MBRSC and South Korea’s Satrec Initiative, a company specializing in satellite technology. The MBRSC team played a central role in defining the technical specifications, leading the preliminary design, and conducting the technical validation phase.

As the project progressed, MBRSC engineers finalized the design and oversaw manufacturing in partnership with Satrec Initiative. This collaborative approach aligns with the UAE’s broader strategy of knowledge transfer and technology localization, aimed at developing in-house expertise in satellite technology.

Leadership Insights on the Etihad-SAT Launch

Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Vice President of MBRSC, emphasized the importance of this achievement in reinforcing the UAE’s technological leadership in space exploration.

“The UAE is steadily advancing towards strengthening its position among the leading nations in space science and technology, guided by the vision of our leadership and its continuous support for this vital sector. We express our gratitude for this support, which has resulted today in a new achievement with the launch of Etihad-SAT. The satellite represents a strategic step in enhancing our Earth observation capabilities and gathering critical data that supports sustainable development. This milestone also paves the way for leveraging space technologies across various fields that serve the nation.”

Hamad Obaid AlMansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, echoed these sentiments, noting that the launch aligns with the UAE’s National Space Programme and its long-term goal of innovation-driven space technology development.

“The successful launch of Etihad-SAT is a testament to the support and vision of our leadership, reflecting the progress the UAE is making in the space sector and further reinforcing its contributions in this domain. This achievement reflects our commitment to advancing the UAE National Space Programme and a part of our ambitious strategy to drive innovation and space technology development. It aligns with a long-term vision aimed at empowering future generations to contribute to sustainable progress in space exploration.”

Advanced Features and Capabilities of Etihad-SAT

Etihad-SAT is designed with state-of-the-art Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology, which allows for:

  • High-precision Earth observation in any weather condition.

  • Three distinct imaging modes:

    • Spot mode for high-resolution images of small areas.

    • Scan mode for broader area coverage.

    • Strip mode for extended observations over longer regions.

  • AI-driven data processing to improve accuracy and efficiency.

These capabilities make Etihad-SAT useful across multiple industries, including:

SAR technology is particularly valuable because, unlike traditional optical imaging, it relies on radar signals rather than light. This allows for continuous data collection, even in conditions of cloud cover, rain, or darkness.

International Collaboration and Future Prospects

Ee-Eul Kim, CEO & President of Satrec Initiative, praised the UAE for its visionary approach to space development and emphasized the importance of international partnerships in advancing space technology.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the UAE on the successful launch of Etihad-SAT, a remarkable achievement. This milestone not only strengthens the UAE’s capabilities in Earth observation but also highlights the importance of international collaboration. As a long-standing partner, Satrec Initiative is proud to collaborate with MBRSC to develop high-resolution SAR satellite. We look forward to continued cooperation with MBRSC and the UAE in shaping the future of space technology.”

The Mission Control Centre at MBRSC will now oversee the operation and management of the satellite, analyzing the data transmitted back to Earth. The satellite’s successful launch and operation are expected to pave the way for future advancements in UAE’s space capabilities, solidifying its role as a key player in the global space industry.

Conclusion

The launch of Etihad-SAT marks a groundbreaking achievement for the UAE’s space program, reinforcing the country’s commitment to technological innovation and scientific exploration. With its advanced SAR technology, AI-driven data processing, and diverse applications, the satellite is set to play a crucial role in various industries, further positioning the UAE as a leader in space science and Earth observation.

As the nation continues to invest in space exploration and satellite technology, the success of Etihad-SAT is a strong indication of the UAE’s ambition to contribute to global advancements in space technology while supporting sustainable development initiatives.
