UAE Expands Safe Internet for Our Children Campaign

Children learning online with safe internet tools

The UAE, in cooperation with the League of Arab States, the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, and UNICEF’s Regional Office, has launched the second phase of the Safe Internet for Our Children campaign. This announcement came during the 29th session of the Arab Childhood Committee. The Republic of Djibouti chaired the videoconference, which furthermore included civil society representatives, international organizations, and national mechanisms. This group focuses on childhood across Arab countries.

Addressing Online Risks and Challenges

Social media platforms have become highly influential. Consequently, they shape the behavior and values of children. This requires ongoing monitoring of online content. It protects children from exploitation and extremist ideas. It also prevents harmful exposure. Preventing children from using the internet entirely is not a viable option. In fact, its rapid growth makes it an essential tool for education.

The initiative, therefore, aims to create new mechanisms. These mechanisms guide children’s digital use. At the same time, they equip children with the ability to resist harmful influences. The campaign addresses several internet risks. For example, these include cyberbullying, online fraud, and misuse of personal data. Additionally, it tackles screen addiction and the negative effects on children’s mental health.

Innovative Awareness and Collaboration

A highlight of the campaign is a five-episode animated series. It is titled Alpha and Zain. The series is produced in Arabic, English, and French. It presents scenarios faced by modern families. Thus, it conveys essential messages about responsible internet behavior. It also covers digital ethics in artificial intelligence and addressing cyberbullying. Other topics include time management and verifying misinformation. This second phase continues efforts to raise awareness. I
