Trump Grants Second Extension To TikTok Shutdown Deadline
ByteDance has secured additional time to finalise a deal to keep TikTok operating in the United States. President Donald Trump has extended the app’s deadline by another 75 days, marking the second such extension. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that while major progress has been made, more work is needed to complete the necessary approvals. As a result, he signed an executive order allowing TikTok to continue running until mid-June.
This decision gives ByteDance another opportunity to find a suitable U.S.-based partner to manage TikTok’s operations domestically. Trump emphasised that his administration is committed to finalising a deal that ensures national security while maintaining open lines of communication with China. He also reiterated the importance of reciprocal tariffs, claiming they are vital for fair trade between the two nations.
Negotiations Continue Amid Political Tensions
Although progress has been reported, a deal has yet to be finalised. A spokesperson for ByteDance confirmed ongoing discussions with U.S. authorities but noted that key issues still need resolution. Initially, the company faced a January 19 deadline to divest TikTok. However, Trump signed his executive order shortly after taking office, offering an additional window for negotiation.
Before the extension was granted, both Apple and Google temporarily removed TikTok from their app stores, anticipating a potential ban. Yet, the app quickly returned once the order was signed, providing relief to millions of American users. This move highlights the administration’s balancing act—addressing national security concerns while avoiding disruption for TikTok’s user base.
China’s Role and Future Uncertainty
China’s government must also approve any agreement involving ByteDance. As Trump pointed out on Truth Social, cooperation between the two countries remains essential. He stressed that tariffs play a key role in ensuring national security and economic leverage. Moreover, he expressed hope that TikTok would remain active while both nations continue discussions in good faith.
Though this extension delays a possible ban, the situation remains uncertain. Much will depend on how quickly ByteDance and U.S. regulators can reach a consensus that satisfies all parties involved.
