Top cybersecurity trends to watch for in 2023 and beyond for companies

A recent study conducted by Gartner, a US-based research company, has recommended that Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and their teams incorporate more strategic assumptions into their corporate plans to keep pace with the evolving IT security landscape. While it is crucial for CISOs to focus on the present, the constant threat of cyberattacks requires a forward-thinking approach to counter them and prevent any disruption in their operations.

The study lists eight cybersecurity trends that CISOs should be aware of in the coming years and their implications on enterprises and individuals. It also highlights the financial and reputational damages that cyberattacks can cause to companies, with the global average for a data breach in 2022 being $4.35 million.

According to Gartner, the demands of keeping up with a changing cybersecurity landscape will take a toll on leaders, with half of them projected to switch jobs and a quarter jumping to entirely different roles by 2025 due to increased work stressors. However, this can be mitigated by organisations providing a work culture that supports their roles.

Gartner recommends that company boards should include at least one member who has cybersecurity expertise, and by 2026, around 70% of boards are expected to have such an expert. This would help establish a closer relationship between the top brass and the cybersecurity strategy, improving trust and support within the company.
