The emergence of Artificial Intelligence: From Meta to Microsoft

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has been on the rise among tech companies, with executives mentioning the term during earnings calls with increasing frequency. According to a review of conference transcripts by Reuters, tech CEOs have been mentioning phrases such as “AI,” “generative AI,” or “machine learning” two to six times more often in the most recent quarter compared to the previous quarter.

Companies like Microsoft Corp and Alphabet Inc are leading the charge, with each company mentioning AI in their conference calls 39 and 45 times respectively, an increase from their previous quarter’s references. The emergence of AI-powered software like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot, has sparked competition among tech firms to integrate AI into more products and services, with investors betting on which company will come out on top.

Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI and its efforts to make ChatGPT widely available to its cloud customers presents a new challenge to Alphabet, with industry observers speculating that integrating human-like responses from ChatGPT into Microsoft’s Bing search engine could give the company an advantage over Google.
