Spotify Launches AI Recaps to Enhance Audiobook Listening

Spotify has launched a new AI feature for audiobooks called Recaps, designed to help listeners stay engaged without rewinding. The feature works like a “previously on” segment from a TV series and offers summaries based on the portions already listened to. It activates automatically in the iOS app for a limited number of English-language audiobooks, and expansion to more titles is planned.

Although the Recap button stays visible at all times, listeners must complete at least 15–20 minutes of an audiobook before summaries become available. Additionally, new summaries are updated regularly as progress continues, helping users finish books more efficiently.

How Recaps Works and Where It’s Available

Recaps aim to support users who pause books often or switch between multiple titles. The feature analyzes previously played content and produces short summaries that guide listeners back into the story effortlessly.

Although it is currently limited to a small audiobook catalog, Spotify intends to broaden access over time. Users don’t need to manage settings since Recaps is enabled automatically where supported. Moreover, the feature integrates seamlessly into the listening interface, so it doesn’t interrupt the experience.

Spotify highlighted that the Recaps feature uses AI responsibly. It does not train large language models on audiobook content, nor does it generate voices or replace narrators. The summaries exist alongside the original audiobook and do not mimic narrative performance.

Earlier this year, Spotify partnered with AI narration provider ElevenLabs to expand its audiobook offerings. It has also taken steps to address rising concerns around AI-generated content in music by improving AI detection tools and requiring disclosure when AI is used. While the company continues building responsible AI features, it is also working with music industry partners to support ethical innovation in audio.
